HOMECOMING
COURT AND QUEEN

The members of the Homecoming court, along with all
of Mathews County, waited anxiously for the half time
football game ceremonies and the crowning of the Home¬
coming Queen.

Lovely Mava Callis had been selected by her schoolmates
for the coveted title. Mr. Ward, principal crowned her
“Queen Mava” as her court and friends watched.

The football game between Mathews and Charles City
ended in a defeat for MHS.

Todd Carter & Pauline Davis

The festivities continued through the Homecoming
dance where many students and alumni enjoyed themselves
to the spirited beat of “Autumn.”

SENIOR DAY

Senior Day was the first in the final
Senior Activities. The Senior Assembly
began at 9:00 a.m. Many Seniors
received awards, certificates and
scholarships from economic clubs and
organizations in the school and the
community.

Then the fun started as the Seniors
began delivering their “Last Will and
Testament”. Many students and
teachers were left unusual and
unwanted objects.

Following the assembly, Seniors
spent the remainder of the day and
evening at King Dominion.

GRADUATION

1976

June 8, Graduation Day, the day all the Seniors had
looked forward to. Alas! amidst the joys of graduation
were tears of joy and sadness, the thought of leaving and
losing friends and a school family that had been so dear.

In spite of all this, the processional proceeded , each
speaker left charges to the graduating class, and finally
each student heard his or her name called for the last
time and realized a new life was just beginning.

NEW FACES AROUND M.H.S.

Mrs. Virginia McDaniels was named permanent substitute
for M.H.S. and could be seen daily in almost any classroom.
When she wasn’t substituting, she worked as an assistant to
anyone who needed her. Mrs. McDaniels was a welcome
addition to the M.H.S. Staff.

Mrs. McDaniels

Mr. Frank Walling was named Mathews High
School Nurse during this school term. He helped
many of us with our aches and pains and he always
had an ear to listen to whatever problems we had.

Mr. Walling also taught Proper Health Care to
Home Economic and Physical Education classes as
a part of their regular class work.

Thanks Mr. Walling for being a very special
friend to M.H.S.
